ShapeDrawing Challenge ✏️

Use a Shape as a Fantasy Drawing Beginning

A magical theme does not have to begin with a complete character description. An outline can suggest one part of an imagined creature, object, or place.

A separate activity to try

Choose a simple starting contour and assign it a role in an invented fantasy idea. A small feature can be more useful than deciding the whole drawing at once. The artist chooses what makes the idea magical.

Look at the next choice

Add only the surrounding detail needed to explain that choice. A short name or an imagined function can accompany the picture if words sound interesting. There is no required list of fantasy features.

Decide whether to continue

The catalog’s mermaid, unicorn, and fairy books provide separate tracing, construction, and grid references. Those books are theme-focused companions, not additional volumes of Shape Drawing Challenge.

Use a published book for another starting task

How to Draw: Mermaids, Unicorns, And Other Cute Stuff offers build the demonstrated character through six illustrated stages. Compare that task with Shape Drawing Challenge’s repeated outlines and open-ended responses. The practice suggestions in this article are website-created activities, not additional printed features being claimed for either book.

Keep the next idea open

Shape Drawing Challenge gives artists 16 repeated beginnings, six illustrated examples per shape, and room for 480 independently chosen drawings.
